American Tribal Style® Belly Dance is a celebration of feminine power, co-operation and sisterhood. It’s also a creative outlet, and a joyful way to stay in shape. On a deeper level, ATS® style belly dance can be a source of body acceptance. This dance style was created by Carolena Nericco in San Francisco the late 80s. It is an improvised group dance that fuses North African dance, Flamenco and traditional Indian dance. Dancers communicate with each other using stylised cues– a visual dance language– to create flowing works of art. You can read more about the style on the Fat Chance Belly Dance® site.
This mini documentary is an interesting introduction to ATS®, featuring my teachers Carolena Nerricco-Bohlman, the creator of the style, and Wendy Allen.
The Tribal Code. This is the code we as ATS® dancers live by, in and out of the studio.
